Background
Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has shown significant fluctuations over recent years. According to recent data, deforestation rates dropped in 2023 and 2024.
This decline has been attributed to stricter enforcement of environmental regulations.
However, several planned developments could impact future deforestation rates:
Government plans for new oil drilling sites
Proposed paving of the BR-319 highway
Potential expansion of industrial activities into preserved regions
Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve based on official deforestation data published by Imazon https://imazon.org.br/ comparing the total deforested area in square kilometers for calendar year 2025 vs 2024.
The market will resolve as YES if the total deforested area in 2025 is greater than 2024, and NO if it is equal to or less than 2024.
Considerations
Imazon typically releases deforestation data monthly, with annual figures becoming available in late January of the following year
